When this client moved into his new 3-story condo, it was cold and lacking personality. The design was contemporary, but his personal style was not. He wanted us to make it feel like home and incorporate many of his existing pieces, plus add some new furnishings to complete the look. It was important to incorporate the contemporary design of the home with the traditional elements he loved. Lucky for us, he has traveled the world, is a voracious reader, and has a very distinct sense of style. We incorporated his personal style into every room by layering area carpets, wall coverings, lighting, draperies, and an abundance of his travel treasures. The custom millwork for the third-floor library required an off-site build then, using a crane, was lifted through the stairwell to fit it in place. Every room in this condo is special and unique, just like our client. Every space in this new home is warm, inviting and tells a special story of the person that lives here.
Key Features:
• We replaced all the lighting fixtures on the main floor, contrasting a very traditional look in the modern kitchen and dining room. We wrapped a silver foil cork wallpaper along the bulkhead in the kitchen and dining room, making the space feel cohesive. This special application made a builder grade bulkhead look like a custom design feature. We opted for masculine charcoal sheers to create warmth but still allow the light to shine through. We recovered existing furniture with luxurious velvets and added details on the back of chairs and cushions to create visual interest. We were able to use the client’s existing silk and wool area carpets and pull the look together with accessories. A whimsical monkey side table is a nod to the owner’s sense of humour.
• We wrapped the client’s office in indigo grass cloth and rich indigo velvet drapes to drench the room with this deep colour, creating a masculine feel. His bedroom was wrapped with textured grass cloth and the blackout drapes provide complete light control. A custom chair and ottoman enable him to read at night before turning in. No bedroom is complete without custom linens, which add the finishing touch to this oasis. The ensuite was transformed with a woven vinyl wall covering, a custom runner to keep the floor warm, and a custom bench to open-up the space. The Asian inspired wall covering surrounding the tub area speaks to the client’s travels in that part of the world. An open shelf allows for easy access to linens as well as display for cherished collectibles.
• The third story bonus room was converted into a library, complete with bespoke millwork which not only contains a substantial library, but also a fantastic custom saltwater aquarium. Again, the walls are wrapped with a heavily textured wall covering to add depth to the expansive space and help it to feel inviting. This client also needed a place to play his piano and we created separate zones that accommodate piano playing, reading, and watching TV. The spare bedroom was converted to his hobby room, where we incorporated whimsical wallpaper, a custom pullout sofa for guests and more storage for treasured items.
