There are many pollutants that can be harmful to fabrics. Dust (can be acidic), UV light, soot, pollen, perspiration and mold can breakdown the furniture fabric. In order to keep your furniture clean and healthy there are a few things you can do:
1. Turn the cushions as it helps reduce the wear and tear of the fabric and shape.
2. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum! This removes up to 95% of dry soil. Dry soil is the number one reason your fabric wears and stains over time.
3. Velvets can be more delicate and should be brushed WITH the nap rather than vacuumed.
4. Spot clean your furniture. While regular care does a lot for your upholstered furniture’s maintenance, accidents will happen. Blot any spoils immediately with a clean folded towel, never rub but blot gently.
If you have upholstery stains you cannot remove on your own, contact a professional upholstery cleaner. Be careful! There are many types of cleaning methods, and some are not suitable for some fabrics. Dry cleaning, shampoo cleaning and steam, are just a few methods to consider. Let your cleaner know what type of fabric is on your furniture so they can advise which to use.
Upholstery cleaners should be careful with the following furniture accents such as nail head trim, cording, stitching, design and patterns, fabric blends, buttons, and the filling itself. Find a cleaner that is reputable and one you can trust to take special care of your furniture. If you need a referral, please ask us.
There are additional options to keep your fabrics healthy. Adding a fabric protector helps reduce the spread of bacteria, prevents contamination, helps release dust and pollutants when vacuuming, and protects from general wear and tear.
