As Interior Designers, paint can be one of the most important selections we make for our clients. It’s not just about finding the right color, it’s also about selecting the right product and finish. We have a lot of great design tips and information regarding paint selections and products, but we often refer to our painters. Let’s be honest they are the ones working with the product and have seen it applied in multiple ways.
We’ll be focusing on Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams products. They are the products we most commonly work with and have given us the best results over the past 18 years. High-quality paints include high-quality binders that help prevent peeling, scuffing, fingerprints, mildew and fading. Binders are the most expensive component of the paint and therefore are the first thing to be compromised with lower-quality paint.
Selecting Paint for Bathrooms
The most common space to be overlooked when choosing the right paint are “wet” areas such as bathrooms, home spas and laundry rooms. We recommend using Benjamin Moore Aura Waterborne Interior paint. This paint is a premium finish that repels moisture and is mildew resistant. This paint will also help with colour pigmentation and keep colors true over time. This paint comes in a matte finish only. We also recommend Sherwin Williams Emerald. This is a great option if you don’t want a matte finish for your bathroom. Commonly semi-gloss finishes have been selected for bathrooms to help with durability and washability. The emerald is great as it also has antimicrobial agents that inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the paint surface.
Selecting Paint for Ceilings
We often overlook the ceilings of our homes and wrongfully so. Painting a ceiling can have a huge impact on the interior design of a room. Most people see the ceiling as “white” whether they realize it or not. If we are fortunate to be working with a finished flat ceiling, we will match the colour of the walls or wallpaper. Although it can be exciting to paint a ceiling a dark colour, you need to make sure you have the right professional using the right paint. Using dark colors will bring out unwanted imperfections from the drywall in your ceiling. We recommend using Benjamin Moore Waterborne Ceiling Paint for this reason. This paint is great for an easy and smooth application with minimal splatter no matter what colour you select. We also recommend Sherwin Williams Duration. This is a good paint with great coverage.
No VOC Paint Options
Paint off-gasses are a more common concern with many of our clients these days. Especially if we are spending more time working in our homes and have limited options during a renovation. We recommend Benjamin Moore Natura Waterborne Interior Paint. This paint offers no off-gassing and no smell. This is a great option for individuals or family members who have asthma and sensitivity due to allergies. If you want to take the no VOC to the next level, we recommend using Sherwin Williams Harmony. This no VOC paint can continue to improve indoor air quality from other sources in your home including insulation, cabinetry and carpet. This paint also has the ability to slow the growth of mold and mildew on the paint surface.
Painting Bathrooms Baseboards/Casing/Trim/Handrails
When painting baseboards, casing, trim or handrails, the biggest thing to consider is these surfaces can see a lot of wear over time from day-to-day life. We suggest Benjamin Moore Advance Waterborne Interior Alkyd Paint. This is a great paint for a lacquer-like finish, it has an extended open time, meaning it won’t dry too fast, giving you more time to work and minimal brush marks. We also suggest Sherwin Williams Proclassic paint. This paint has great flow and leveling for an even finish. It’s also available in a water-based Alkyd base recommended for trim and handrails. Both paint options come available in a semi-gloss finish which is recommended for easy maintenance and durability.
Standard Wall Paint
Last, we’ll look at our favorite wall paints for general applications. As we all know there are a variety of rooms in our houses that see a different range of wear and tear. We know it’s important for our clients to select a paint that will be able to stand up to any amount of use. For a general paint selection, we suggest Benjamin Moore Regal Select Waterborne Interior Paint. This paint is very durable and can stand up to everyday life. It has uniform coverage providing the quality look you’d expect. This paint comes in a range of finishes and is great for any space. We recommend satin/eggshell finish for any household. We also recommend Sherwin Williams Emerald for an overall high-quality paint. We mentioned this paint for bathrooms, but it is a great paint selection for its durability and washability. Again, this paint is available in a range of finishes, but we would recommend their satin finish.
