The laundry room is often overlooked when designing or renovating a home. We spend a lot of time in our homes so why shouldn’t the laundry room be just as beautiful as the rest of the house. Having said that, a laundry room needs to be well organized and functional, so laundry tasks are easy plus there is room for other purposes. The average-sized laundry room can store many items therefore designing the best layout and storage solutions are important considerations. Below are some of our favourite interior design tips to create your dream laundry room.
Taller Storage Cabinet – Having a taller storage cabinet allows you to store all sorts of items in the laundry room. Consider putting in a taller storage cabinet to fit tools like brooms mops, buckets, vacuums and even recycling containers.
Cabinet Space – Laundry room cabinets are so valuable. They not only store your laundry soap, bleach etc., they can be the perfect space to store those household cleaning items you want tucked away but still easily accessible.
Counter Surface – It is beneficial to have a counter surface in the laundry room to easily fold and sort clothing as they come out of the washer or dryer. Being able to complete laundry tasks in one place helps make your laundry room more efficient.
Hanging Rod – Another practical solution is to install a hanging rod in the laundry room. You can hang dress shirts, pants, dresses etc, after they’ve been ironed and/or hang-to-dry delicate clothing. If you have a window in the space, your clothes will dry a little quicker as well.
Drying Racks – Another hanging solution is pullout drying racks that slide in and out. These racks help with storage because they simply tuck right back under the countertop. Utilizing any type of laundry rack will ensure you have everything you need right in the laundry room to wash, dry, and iron your clothes.
Ironing board – Ironing boards can be bulky, so an interior design trick is to build one into your millwork. This is a great storage solution because it makes it much easier to pull out the ironing board then tuck it away.
Don’t be afraid to have a little bit of fun while designing your laundry room. Since it’s often a smaller space, it is the perfect opportunity to add some colour or even a bold patterned wallpaper. This way, when you enter your laundry room you feel good seeing a bright and cheery space instead of a dark and dreary room. You may even want to hang a TV in your laundry room and watch your favourite show while doing these mindless tasks. This would make ironing or fold clothes much more entertaining!
