Mount Royal Heritage Home Renovation Project

Calgary Interior Decorating and Home Renovation Project

This heritage home needed a refresh to lighten and update the main floor and basement. It was dark and dated and the new owners wanted to create a bright and inviting space. We started in the kitchen by painting the existing cabinets, installing new marble backsplash and countertops, plus adding cabinet inserts and lighting. We repeated the same finishes in the family room to provide a cohesive look between these two spaces. This client wanted to use their existing heirloom dining table and carpet, so we created a dramatic space with indigo grass cloth wall covering and custom silk drapes. The new modern lighting juxtaposed against the antique furnishings added an unexpected element.

Elegant custom furnishings created a cohesive look in the formal living room and the same modern lighting was repeated in the wall scones. The original Emily Carr painting took center stage over the fireplace. The custom carpet runner in the front entry invites guests to access the front closet in this otherwise tiny space. The basement now has an oversized sectional for TV watching and lounging and we created a games area, perfect for late-night dining and playing cards.

Key Features:

• Refinishing the main floor saved valuable resources and allowed for splurges on marble in the kitchen backsplash and fireplace surround.

• We painted out the cabinets rather than replacing them and upgraded black granite countertops to a marble look quartz. Stunning polished nickel and glass fixtures elevate the kitchen.

• The custom furnishings in the family room mimic the same colour palette as the kitchen to create a comfortable, unified look and feel. The client loves pink so we were able to incorporate those details in the family room without making it feel too feminine.

• The living room created a sophisticated, neutral backdrop for their extensive art collection.

• Custom furniture allowed us to make the room feel more intimate despite being very narrow and long.

• We created a very large, oversized custom sectional in the basement provided ample space to lounge and watch TV.  We used the remaining space to create a games area so that the teenagers are happy to hang out with family and friends.
