A common misconception in decorating is that everything in the room has to match. It is easy to think that the best way to create a cohesive space is for everything to be the same but in reality, all this does is create a flat and uninspiring space. Instead, layering should be utilized to create a visually interesting and captivating design. Some of the most stunning interiors don’t match at all, rather they layer pattern and color. Here are some great ways to layer your space and create a room that you will love to spend time in.

Layering does not have to mean bold or cluttered. It all comes down to the colors and textures you choose. It can be as bold or as soft as you desire however, you want to choose colors that blend and are a similar strength. Again, this doesn’t mean match it just means they should have a similar tone and visual impact. If you want a vibrant space all the colors chosen should be an equal vibrancy and vice versa with soft coloring.

Every element in a design is a new layer added to an overall concept. You should choose a base element that you want to build upon and figure out which layer you want to be the focus of the room, whether it’s the floor, walls, furniture, or accessories. You can add depth through pattern, color or texture in other elements.

If you feel overwhelmed with layering and don’t know where to begin, throw pillows are a great way to dip your toe in. You can start with pillows of the same color range but in a different shade or pattern than the other elements in the room. Another easy way to add layers is to paint a piece of furniture a couple shades lighter or darker than the walls.

Art is another way to layer your space. You can achieve both a modern collected look or a more eclectic design depending on how much you layer different colors and frames within your artwork. Rugs are also a great layering tool. They should pull colors from surrounding elements but add some much-needed warmth and texture.

Wallpaper is one of our favourite design elements that can add layering in a very dramatic way. It allows us to personalize a space with colours, patterns, metallics and beading.

Window coverings and drapery help to further add layers and can be either sheer and soft, adding an airy quality, or heavier like a velvet, to add an elegant opulence to a room, or bolder with color and pattern, to further layer on the other elements of the room.

Lighting is its own layer adding significantly to the other textures in the room and the overall warmth. Accessories and styling are the final layer that can help to pull everything together using all the colors in the design making a room feel complete.
