As designers, paint can be one of the most important selections we make for our clients. It’s not just about finding the right color, it’s also about selecting the right product and finish. We have a lot of great tips and information regarding paint selections and products, but we often refer to our painters. Let’s be honest they are the ones working with the product and have seen it applied in multiple ways.

We’ll be focusing on Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams products. They are the products we most commonly work with and have given us the best results over the past 18 years. High quality paints include high quality binders that help prevent peeling, scuffing, fingerprints, mildew and fading. Binders are the most expensive component of the paint and therefore are the first thing to be compromised with lower quality paint.

Bathrooms

The most common space to be overlooked when selecting the right paint are “wet” areas such as bathrooms, home spas and laundry rooms. We recommend using Benjamin Moore Aura Waterborne Interior paint. This paint is a premium finish that repels moisture and is mildew resistant. This paint will also help with color pigmentation and keep colors true over time. This paint comes as a matte finish only. We also recommend Sherwin Williams Emerald. This is a great option if you don’t want a matte finish for your bathroom. Commonly semi gloss finishes have been selected for bathrooms to help with durability and washability. The emerald is great as it also has antimicrobial agents that inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the paint surface.

Ceilings

We often overlook the ceilings of our homes and wrongfully so. You can have huge impact on a space even with paint. Most clients will see the ceiling as “white” whether they realize it or not. If we are fortunate to be working with a finished flat ceiling, we will match the color of the walls or wallpaper. Although it can be dramatic and exciting to paint a ceiling a dark color you need to make sure you are working with the right professional with the right paint. Using dark colors will bring out unwanted imperfections from the drywall of your ceiling. We recommend using Benjamin Moore Waterborne Ceiling Paint for this reason. This paint is great for an easy and smooth application with minimal splatter no matter what color you select. We also recommend Sherwin Williams Duration. This is a great paint with great coverage.

No VOC Paint Options

This is becoming more and more of a concern with many of our clients. Especially during Covid when many of us are spending so much time in our homes and have limited options during a renovation. We recommend Benjamin Moore Natura Waterborne Interior Paint. This paint offers no off gassing and no smell. This is a great option for individuals or family members who have asthma and sensitivity due to allergies. If you want to take the no VOC to the next level, we recommend using Sherwin Williams Harmony. This no VOC paint has the ability to continue to improve indoor air quality from other sources in your home including insulation, cabinetry and carpet. This paint also has the ability to slow the growth of mold and mildew on the paint surface.

Baseboards/Casing/Trim/Handrails

When painting baseboards, casing, trim or handrails, the biggest thing to consider is these surfaces can see a lot of wear overtime from day-to-day life. We suggest Benjamin Moore Advance Waterborne Interior Alkyd Paint. This is a great paint for a lacquer like finish, it has an extended open time meaning it won’t dry super fast giving you more time to work and minimal brush marks. We also suggest Sherwin Williams Proclassic paint. This paint has great flow and leveling for an even finish. It’s also available in a water-based Alkyd base recommended for trim and handrails. Both paint options come available in a semi- gloss finish which is recommended for easy maintenance and durability.

Standard Wall Paint

Last, we’ll look at our favorite wall paints for general applications. As we all know there are a variety of rooms in our houses that each see a different range of wear and tear. We know it’s important for our clients to select a paint that will be able to stand up to any amount of use. For a general paint selection, we suggest Benjamin Moore Regal Select Waterborne Interior Paint. This paint has an outstanding durability to stand up to everyday life. It has uniform coverage and finish to give you the quality look you expect. This paint comes in a range of finishes and great for any space. We recommend for the common household to use satin/eggshell finish. We also recommend Sherwin Williams Emerald for an overall high-quality paint. We mentioned this paint for bathrooms, but it is a great paint selection for its durability and washability. Again, this paint is available in a range of finishes, but we would recommend their satin finish.
